You won't find chocolate that is better for you... but look for yourselves... here is what you will find in Conscious Chocolate bars.
The basis of each bar is the same; raw organic cacao powder, raw organic cacao butter, raw organic coconut butter, raw organic carob and raw organic agave nectar.
We then add a variety of organic, wild, sundried fruits, nuts, superfoods and therapeutic essential oils to our bars to make up the innovative range of Conscious Chocolates.
Cacao powder, which is sometimes called chocolate or cocoa powder, is perhaps the most important ingredient in chocolate. It comes from cacao beans which grow in pod-like fruits on Theobroma cacao trees. We use raw cacao, which literally has the skins blown off to protect the natural flavours and goodness, it is never roasted, so is less bitter and requires less sweetener. In stark contrast conventionally produced cacao beans are roasted with the skins on, which intensifies their bitterness, they need milk or excessive sugar to mask this taste.
Cacao powder is a source of the alkaloid Theobromine, which has the ability to energize and heal the human body. It is a stimulant, so can make you feel a natural lift or high, but without the lows associated with other stimulants, such as caffeine. Cacao is also a richer source of magnesium than any common food. Magnesium has thousands of health benefits, most importantly it helps fight heart disease with clot prevention and strong blood vessel dilating properties.
If you find a bar of Conscious Chocolates makes you feel good, that’s because of the amino acid Tryptophan which occurs naturally in cacao. Don’t be surprised if you feel love more after eating Conscious Chocolate either. Cacao is an excellent source of phenylethylamine (PEA) which enhances feelings of love.▲ Back to top
Derived from the same tree as cacao powder, cacao butter is extracted from the cacao beans by pressing. Cacao butter is what creates that delicious melting of the chocolate when you eat it, spreading the taste and texture around your mouth. Cacao butter is natural oil, which contains stearic acid (the fatty acid also abundant in olive oil) and high levels antioxidants such as flavoniods catechin and epicatechin, these are known to fight the free radicals, which cause aging, and also protect the heart and arteries.
Cocoa butter can also relieve the affects of arthritis; it is used in many medicines and pharmaceutical products that combat the disease.▲ Back to top
Carob powder is nutrient rich and comes from the dried pods of the carob tree. Because cacao (chocolate) powder is bitter, carob is used as a sweeter, as an alternative sugar. The flavours of cacao and carob complement each other to create a rich chocolate taste. Carob helps with the absorption of calcium, which helps to keep bones strong and healthy, and provides polyphenols and flavonols which act as antioxidants to help fight free radicals.▲ Back to top
Coconut butter is the ingredient that gives Conscious Chocolates its delicate silky, creamy texture; lightening the intense taste of the cacao and carob powders. It is a pure product, retaining all the health properties of coconut, which can reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent bacterial, yeast, fungal and viral infections and help regulate blood sugar and prevent or control diabetes. Not surprisingly, it is also great for improving energy levels and keeping skin soft and smooth.▲ Back to top
Agave nectar is particularly well suited to the production of raw chocolate. It is a natural sweetener taken from blue agave plants, which has been used in Mexico for centuries as both a food and medicine. Organic, raw agave has low GI, which means it is suitable for diabetics. Agave is sweeter than conventional sugar, so less is required in chocolate, keeping calories to a minimum. It also contains inulin, a probiotic which helps regulate the balance of sugar and glucose in the body.▲ Back to top
